By Andrew King ANOTHER WHEELIE bin has been set alight in Burnside fuelling further fears for residents’ safety. For the past three months bins on the street and on driveways, near houses, have been deliberately set on fire in the Burnside, Bryndwr and Ilam areas. The latest arson was on Memorial Ave, near the intersection of Greers Rd, at about 3.30am on Saturday. Police are following up the incident. Last Saturday, six wheelie bins were set alight with Detective Sergeant Mike Freeman urging the perpetrator to talk to them before anyone is seriously hurt. “Police are treating the incidents as arson and believe they are linked to previous wheelie bin fires in the area,” Detective Sergeant Freeman said. The previous four attacks were in May but there had been a period of at least a month where there had been no fires. Residents in the area have also been told by police to keep their wheelie bins out of sight.

Dad’s punt wins Crusader visit

By Julia Evans MICHAEL STIRLING is officially the coolest parent. At least in the eyes of the pupils from St Joseph’s School in Papanui who received a visit from Crusaders players. Mr Stirling won a special visit from players David Havili, Pete Samu and Seta Tamanivalu as part of the Placemakers Punt for Prizes competition. During round eight of the Super Rugby competition, he correctly picked all seven of the games and was put into a final draw – which he won. “It was a bit of sharp shooting,” he said. So he nominated his daughter Taylor’s school to receive the visit. “The younger ones appreciate the players, they look up to them as heroes,” Mr Stirling said. The Crusaders hosted a mini Elmwood coaching session as well as dishing out a few autographs and a selfie or two. Which more than paid off. “I’ve been told she’s pretty good at tackling now,” Mr Stirling said. Placemakers Canterbury marketing manager James Munro said the company is thrilled to be able to offer such unique and memorable prizes to rugby fans.
GRAFFITI IN ST ALBANS St Albans has gone from having the highest number of graffiti incidents in the city to the fourth highest, according to the latest city council data. Earlier in the year, it featured alongside the central city as the worst-hit suburb. However, during May in St Albans, there were 56 incidents, down from more than 100 in March and 70 in April. The highest number of graffiti incidents during May were recorded in the central city, Linwood and Sydenham.

QE II UPGRADE UNDER WAY Work has begun on upgrading QE II Dr from Grimseys to Innes Rds. The site clearance work involves tree felling and vegetation removal to allow for two new lanes to be built. Traffic will be stopped for a maximum of three minutes at a time when the big trees come down. The construction of the two new lanes will begin in September.

Creative young montage By Julia Evans YOUNG PEOPLE were encouraged to “speak up” through art which is now on display in Papanui. As part of Te Ora Hou Otauthai’s Polyphony project, 10 art works are being featured on the windows of the Papanui Library for the next year.
Youth from Papanui High School, Te Kaupapa Whakaora Alternative Education, Casebrook Intermediate and Te Ora Hou Otautahi submitted their pieces based on the theme: “Our voices count, count our voices”. Papanui-Innes Community Board deputy chairwoman Emma Norrish said she is
amazed at the quality of the artworks. “So impressed with how these young people have put themselves and their stories out there,” Ms Norrish said. The programme has been run for the past three years and has been supported by the PapanuiInnes and formerly ShirleyPapanui community boards.

By Julia Evans ST ANDREW’S College celebrated its centenary in March. And now the school has forever marked the occasion with the installation of a new centennial sculpture, The Cross He Never Knew, created by internationally-renowned
artist, Angus Muir. It was gifted to St Andrew’s by the Muir family – as Angus and his two brothers, William and Andrew are old collegians. Muir is now the creative director of the collaborative studio Angus Muir Design, based in Auckland but has worked on projects both locally and internationally.
His work is largely created using light and mirror. The sculpture stands in pride of place outside the college’s iconic Strowan House. It was blessed by the school’s chaplain Paul Morrow, alongside a performance from the school’s kapa haka group last week. The Cross He Never Knew is
a phrase from the school song and is intended, like the work itself, to provoke reflection. It references the Scottish Saltire flag – long held as emblematic of the college and its heritage. But it also strikes a contemporary salute to the past 100 years while signalling the college’s bright future.

Countdown to supermarket Countdown‘s upcoming appeal will help provide equipment for patients using Christchurch Hospital’s paediatric and neo-natal services. Sarla Donovan visited cancer sufferer, eightyear-old Jacob Matua, who benefits from the equipment JACOB MATUA has visited this place many times. He’s in the Children’s Haematology and Oncology Centre in the Riverside building at Christchurch Hospital, where’s he’s hooked up to an infusion pump dispensing the medicine he needs. It’ll be 10pm before this day’s treatment is over. After the eight-year-old started getting “headaches and tummy pain, neck pain, arm pain,” at the end of last year, a cancer diagnosis followed, along with nearly three months in hospital, getting treatment. Now he comes in for shorter stays – four days this time – and is crossing his fingers that he

can return to his Clyde Rd home tomorrow. Jacob’s not well enough to
attend his school, Burnside Primary, at the moment. He couldn’t even eat his birthday
chocolate cake in May: “Because sometimes I don’t eat,” he said. Charge nurse manager Chrissy
Bond lightens the mood: “I wish I could say that!” The nurses play cards with him, including memory and skip bo. Lucy Stephenson, who is supervising today, says he’s quite the card shark. “I win every time,” Jacob says with a grin. His aunt Ula Faamoe sits with him, too, giving his mum – who has four other children including twin three-year-old’s – a break. She says he’s well at the moment: “The best I’ve seen him since starting the chemotherapy. He’s making great progress.” Beside his bed, a tall pump stand holds all kinds of medicines and beeping equipment. The $5000 stand is one of four in the centre, purchased with money from the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal in 2013. Mrs Bond said it holds five to six pumps and keeps the medicines stable, as well as allowing nurses to easily read information on screens attached to the pumps. “DHBs find equipment like this hard to fund, because we can ‘make do’ with inferior (devices). It isn’t essential, but it just makes everybody’s life easier,” she said.

Last year’s appeal raised $123,270 for Christchurch Hospital’s paediatric wards and neo-natal unit. Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal chairwoman Ruth Krippner says most kiwi kids will visit hospital at some stage in their childhood. By Julia Evans RETIRING AFTER 23 years as principal of Belfast School could be summed up in one sentence says Peter Simpson: “It was hard.” “Leaving the kids and families that have been part of my life for so long, it was difficult from that perspective,” he said. But now he’s taking on a new challenge and passing some of the knowledge he’s picked up during his time at Belfast to new principals as a leadership advisor. “It’s a chance to give something back,” he said. Although it’ll never replace being around school community. He said he had to go back to visit shortly after leaving because he missed the kids so much. On his “very emotional” last day, the school planted a Mr Simpson tree and sang To Sir, with Love. That brought a tear to my eye, he said. It was a bittersweet moment. “But I couldn’t have done any of it without the people around

me. It’s not a job that you can do on your own,” Mr Simpson said. It was that sense of community that grew in Belfast over the 23 years that he said was the highlight. “Probably one of the best things is the acceptance by the wider community that Belfast is a good school,” he said. When Mr Simpson started, the school was 80 per cent New Zealand European, he said.
But when he left, there were more than 15 different ethnic groups. “I think that just represents New Zealand as a whole,” he said. “The school motto is ‘care, share, learn, grow’ and seeing that acted out through the kids and tolerance of difference was great. They accept the kids as they were and wrapped their arms around them like a family.” He said the fact that new classes and school blocks had to be built, alongside a change in school culture and growing rolls, proved his time at the school was a success. “I absolutely loved my time at Belfast,” Mr Simpson said. On July 24, the school will hold its first mihi whakatau to welcome new principal Sue Elley. Mrs Elley joined the school after being the assistant principal at Hornby High School.

Your Local Views Stop the sale of state houses Nae Nae Higgs writes about state house sales I am a state house tenant, weighing in on the debate about state house sales. Yes, I hear the groans – here we go, another state-awarded wanna-have-it-all about to give us all a lecture on what we are doing wrong as a society – but hear me out. Looking at this idea of sellingoff state houses, I have been working on this for a while now: going to every meeting, trying to stand up scream out – “I am a state tenant, I am your most vulnerable.” I have done this over and over, but while I do this, the Government has dangled more carrots to make it look better for us. Is it really better for us? With our houses falling down
around us, we would try all we could to engage with those responsible. Our cries fell on deaf ears, with replies of: ‘‘We cannot afford to fix your home.” “If we streamline and put HNZ with the Ministry of Social Development we may be able to work more efficiently,” and now: “We shall sell some of these houses on to another provider and see if that works.” All we have now is a broken system, a greedy Government and huge profits to be made and lost, with us as the product. To quieten our voices there is a new carrot, in the form of the provider who will build 150 houses for the state. So let’s just say this new provider buys the 2500 houses. Seems like they can do whatever they would like with them, so long as
they build one for one state house. They can demolish one house, put up six and make profit off five, with only one of them being state-owned. We were not told anything more, except what a good job they have done. A good job at scaring their people, giving misinformation, leaving us to rot while they decide what will give them the best profit, and worse, becoming more of a nanny state deciding what is best for us. A lot of us waited months for the most basic of human needs and also living with what one could only describe as a harassment that is wrapped up in an idea we can’t look after ourselves. If we look hard at the idea of selling these houses we will realise it is a no-brainer, they must be kept in our hands, we need more not less. We need the Government to fix their systems not sell half of their assets. We as HNZ tenants are not trying to be greedy, we are not stating we want to keep our houses because they are ours. They are not, they are the country’s houses, they are the safe places for all New Zealanders. I want this sale stopped.

Readers respond to the article about red light runners at the intersection of Cranford and Berwick St Diane Dick – I travel around Christchurch daily and witness this all the time. In some cases they need to put up more right turning green arrows to make a lot more intersections safer. However, the rude people who keep coming when the lights have changed make it even more unsafe for those turning. Compulsory stops are another hairraising area. Only two or three cars actually stop properly, the rest slow down and treat them like a give way. Good on you for making a stand on this. It’s so obvious why our road toll is going up. Chairman of the Papanui Heritage Group Murray Williams writes about disappearing signs in the domain The genesis of Papanui was the native bush that once straggled across a block of land that covered parts of Rural Sections 3, 5 and 25, an aggregated area of 200 acres bounded by Langdons and Vagues Rds although the bush probably accounted for less than half of this. The native forest was cut out by 1857 and in the early 1880s six and a half acres of this land, with a frontage on Sawyers Arms Rd, was developed as a domain, Papanui’s first public park. In 1960, historian Jim Gardner was keen to spark some interest in the early days of Papanui. At this time he was chairman of the Canterbury Regional committee of the National Historic Places Trust (now Heritage New Zealand). In association with the city council he organised a sign on the Sawyers Arms Rd frontage of the Papanui Domain. The noticeboard featured a map of the area and a brief narrative of the milling of the bush in the 1850s. Analysis of a contemporary

photograph suggests that the sign was of a significant size, probably at least 2m in height. This sign has been removed. It is not known when or by whom, but it had possibly been vandalised. In 1997, Jim Gardner assisted by local historian Mollie Chalklen, convinced the city council and the Historic Places Trust to organise a replacement. Search for clues to origin of wooden time capsule THE SMALL time capsule found under the St Albans Community Centre is actually a small wooden box which is likely to be water damaged. It is about 30cm long, 15cm high and 11.5cm deep.

The screws holding it together have rusted so it has been exposed to moisture at some stage. The St Albans Residents’ Association is looking for anyone related to the residents who founded the
centre in 1867. The time capsule was buried on July 31, 1920, by Mayor Henry Thacker. But the existence of the 97-year-old capsule, now with the city council, wasn’t known until it was found.

Pre-school children celebrate Matariki through production By Julia Evans GLITTER, COLOURED paper, crayons and paint were amongst the tools pre-schoolers from the Bishopdale YMCA were armed with when creating a Matariki play. Last Thursday, the children, aged from six months to six years old, put on a production for parents and staff to celebrated the Maori New Year.
Matariki was introduced to the children through the legend of Tamarereti and his fishing adventure. The YMCA children spent the month practising songs and creating artworks and props for our very own rendition of The creation of the night sky. Whanau and families of the children made a crowd of more than 50 people watching on.

News Water the only way to read poem By Julia Evans SAMANTHA Jory-Smart’s literary work is now part of the city’s history. But her poem, A Promise, can only be seen when it’s wet. The Burnside High School student was asked to write the poem to feature on one of the central city laneways. The Mollett St block of the South Frame was recently opened by Minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration Nicky Wagner. It features a pounamu built into the pavement. But it is more importantly the home to the country’s first raining poetry installation. Samantha’s poem has been printed onto the pavement in invisible chemical spray that only reveals itself when wet. She said the poem came from a mix of wanting to include Maori culture, a tale about the mataī tree, and create a sense of Christchurch’s regrowth. “It’s amazing to contribute to Christchurch and be a part of the rebuild,” Samantha said. Mrs Wagner helped Samantha unveil the poem by pouring water from a watering can over it. She said it was exciting Mollett

Further $45k signed off for Plunket rooms However, Mayor Lianne Dalziel is sceptical whether repairing the old building is in the city council’s best interests. She said it was a challenge to make the decision as the city council was not provided with a detailed report. Ms Dalziel said the repairs would only get the building to 67 per cent of the new building standard. “It will still be old, still be unimproved and still be poorly insulated. It has old services and contains significant inherent maintenance issues,” she said. The building will be home to a social worker, who is being funded by the Papanui-Innes

Originally budgeted at $30,000, the quote was then upped to $75,000 for the rooms to be repaired for community use. Papanui city councillor Mike Davidson said it was a “big win” for Mike the Northcote and Davidson Redwood area. “This is not much money in the grand scheme of what we’re going to achieve in the community,” Cr Davidson said.
Community Board. Cr Davidson said the Plunket rooms are in an ideal location next to the Redwood Library. They will also be used as a community gathering space. A research report from city council staff has shown that a lot of young people feel unsafe in local parks around Northcote and Redwood. “(The area) lacks neighbourhood space for people to come together and the younger generations feel unsafe in the parks due to drugs and gang involvement in the area,” he said. The city council approved the additional funding in the 201718 Annual Plan. MUSIC: St Margaret’s College chamber choir has made it to the national finals of the Big Sing. Only 24 choirs from around the country have been selected. The finale takes place in Wellington from August 24 to 26.

Fire Service’s new look By Mark Thomas - specialist fire investigator THE NEW Zealand Fire Service disappeared last Saturday. It ceased to exist. Fire and Emergency New Zealand began life in its place. It’s what we’ll be called into the future. What’s the reason? Until now, there have effectively been two fire services in the country. Those that covered urban settlements, towns and cities, and those that tackled mainly wildfire in more rural settings. To a certain extent, the boundaries were blurred and we generally co-operated as much as we could. The new Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act combines us into a single organisation, still with distinct urban and rural sides but working side by side. It’s got to be better.
As far as most New Zealanders go, there won’t be any change whatsoever except the fire trucks that respond to your emergency might have different stickers on the side. For those of us in the new organisation, there’s some learning of new legislation but essentially it’s business as usual. Christchurch had a quiet week as the change occurred. Ten people got themselves trapped in a lift at a city bar in the early hours last Saturday morning. It took about half an hour to free them. And a fire truck was used to hold up a severed power pole in Barrington St after a car crash on Sunday evening which kept live wires off the street and power going for Spreydon homes. Finally, fire crews assisted ambulances at about 10 incidents where people suffered seizures and died suddenly. That’s about double a normal week.

Connetics Shield-holders miss national competition

But coach David Williams is not looking to blame outside forces, saying it was gutting but entirely their own fault. Four teams were selected from the Connetics first XI football competition to compete at the Boys Lotto Premier Football Tournament in Napier from September 4-8. “A draw against Shirley and letting Cashmere back into the game, which also ended up being a draw, didn’t help. If either of those games had of been a win instead of a draw, then we would be in Napier,” he said. St Andrew’s College, St Thomas, Lincoln High and Cashmere High have all made the cut for the 32-team national tournament. The teams were picked during round eight when the top four included the selected teams. Burnside were fifth in round eight, but have since moved to third after wins against Middleton Grange and Lincoln High. In their match against Lincoln, Burnside also won the Connetics Shield for the

CURRIED TOMATO LAMB SHANKS Ingredients 1 Tbsp Olive oil 4 Lamb shanks, large 1 Onion, sliced 2 cloves Garlic, crushed 2 Tbsp Curry powder, medium 800g Tomatoes, chopped 2 cups Beef stock 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper Directions Heat oven to 180 deg C. Place lamb shanks in an oven pan. Heat oil in a large frying pan, add onion and cook over a medium heat for five minutes to soften. Add garlic and curry powder, then cook for one minute more to release flavours. Add tomatoes and stock, bring to the boil, then pour the hot mixture over the lamb shanks. Cover dish and bake for two and a half to three hours, turning shanks once, until meat is very tender. Season sauce with salt and pepper to taste and serve with
vegetables of your choice.

Cook pasta in boiling salted water for eight to 10 minutes until al dente – just tender to the bite. Heat one tablespoon of oil, pine nuts, crumbs, one tbsp finely grated lemon rind, pitted and roughly chopped olives, roughly chopped anchovy, parsley and garlic in a frying pan, stirring until crumbs and pine nuts are lightly toasted. Heat a saucepan of water and cook the broccoli for four minutes until just tender. Drain
Ingredients 400g Pasta spirals 3 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil ½ cup Pine nuts 1 cup Breadcrumbs 1 Lemon ½ cup Kalamata olives 4 fillets Anchovy fillets 2 Tbsp Fresh parsley 2 cloves Garlic 2 heads Broccoli ¼ cup Parmesan cheese
well and then gently stir broccoli though drained pasta and drizzle with remaining olive oil. Serve topped with crumbs and with grated parmesan cheese. Directions Preheat oven to 180 deg C. Crush chips and mix them on a shallow plate with panko crumbs, curry powder and chicken powder. Break eggs into a shallow dish and lightly mix with a fork. St Andrew’s pair gear up for junior rowing champs By Andrew King THE HARD yards are being put in by two St Andrew’s College rowers as they prepare for the world junior rowing championships. Ben Taylor, of West Melton, and Thomas Russel, of St Albans, have been selected for the junior men’s coxless four to compete in Trakai, Lithuania, next month. Both have been training at the New Zealand Rowing Gallagher High-Performance Centre at Lake Karapiro. They were a part of the winning Maadi
SPORTS Cup team which not only brought back the top prize for the first time in the college’s history, but the Springbok Shield as well. Both said they are incredibly proud to be able to represent their country in a sport they love.

New treatment for fungal nails Feet First, the long-established podiatry clinic in Upper Riccarton, now has a much more efficient and effective means of dealing with the problem of fungal nails, thanks to a new machine they recently obtained from Britain, where it was designed and trialled. Clearanail is a procedure where the Podiatrists use a machine to make tiny holes in the nail without affecting the nail bed – a completely pain-free procedure that then allows the topical application of antifungal solution to directly reach the problem area. Fungal nails may cause the toenail to thicken, which consequently can make shoes feel uncomfortable. Anyone who believes they have a fungal infection of the nails is invited to make an appointment for a consultation with Feet First so one of the qualified Podiatrists can assess if that is the case, and if so, will recommend the Clearanail procedure. This involves the initial treatment, and three follow-up appointments at monthly intervals to check progress. “Fungal nail infections won’t disappear immediately,” clinic director Charlotte Russell says, “so people need to commit to the process, which can take up to four months as the nail grows.” She says now is an ideal time to start fungal nail treatment with Clearanail, so nails will be looking healthy again when the warm, sandal-wearing weather arrives.
